Doodling in the Morning

experiments on brown paper Danny Gregory recently did a lot of work on brown paper. I like the middle ground, the fact that this paper is really cheap (so not intimidating), and the fact that you have to find the mid-tone and work up and down from that.

I haven’t done this too successfully, here, but it was fun.

  1. I love it.

Myself I have always found it easier to draw on paper that is not white. Just less intimidating.

I have one sketchbook with recycled paper of an oatmeal or dun color. I never seem to have as much difficulty getting a drawing started in that book. For one thing, the mid-tone tends to soften every line so that the contrast is not so startling. And the oatmealy flecks and imperfections seem to reassure me that I’m not about to “mess up” the page.

  2. I RECOGNIZE YOUR HAND!

So I guess this exercise is more successful than you thought.

I also like Betsy’s remark, above.

  3. I sometimes go on holiday with rolls of brown wrapping paper. I tried creating a road on volcanic soil with one roll but it kept blowing away. Not getting more connected, this tale. But it is fun to draw on brown paper!
