Fungus the Bogeyman
A friend brought a copy of this amazing graphic novel, now out of print, when they were up here doing the Christmas Bird Count, hoping , perhaps, I’d agree with her that it was the best children’s book ever.
Ron, you’re right.
I’m seeing from the Wikipedia entry that this was turned into a TV miniseries in 2004. I’m sure my niece and nephew, who are heavily into all things gross just now, would appreciate it. I love the art, I love the philosophical turn of thoughts of poor old Fungus (“but what’s it all for?”), and I love the side comments. (And I especially love the triple nipples.)
Thank you, thank you. A treasure.

Indeed, unequaled. It’s far from out of print in the UK, and as far as I know as hugely popular as ever. In stock at Amazon.uk, and I see also available from Amazon.com, but with 4-6 weeks shipping delay. You know that Raymond Briggs also wrote The Snowman? and a wonderful graphic novel about nuclear war, and other unparalleled stuff.
Glad you like it. It really gets into the right spirit, doesn’t it?
How did I miss the miniseries? Dang.I hear there was also a pop-up edition of the book.
I guess I need to send to Hay-on-Wye (which still sounds like an overly health“y” sandwich to me) for another copy for the new grandnephew. Though my little sister might still have GN’s daddy’s copy lying around somewhere to read to her grandson, little Dylan Thomas King. (No kidding.)
You ALWAYS have something catching (dare I say juicy) on your posts. Thank you. I have just the tot to send it to.

I’ve loved this book for years, Pica, and am a big fan of Raymond Briggs’ work in any case. Before I ever saw “Fungus the Bogeyman” I was working on making an artist’s book of a play written by a friend who had titled it “Fungus and Curmudgeonly”. People got it confused with the Briggs book, though it was about two old actors.
I digress, as usual. Try to find another Briggs book called “The Man” and one he did about the Falkands war: “The Tinpot Foreign General and the Old Iron Woman”. I know you’d love them.
