Thanks to Chris of Creek Running North for the link to this event. Please join in if you feel so inclined…
I was just at a Code Pink meeting; one of the things we discussed was the fact that a lot of disability attorneys are pushing hard for Debold voter technology for the vision impaired. Actually, the interests converge about 80% of the time—low floor buses, for example, make boarding faster and vehicles more spacious for everyone, even though they were invented due to the Americans with Disabilities Act. But the exceptions are nasty, such as font-size requirements that force us to speak only in abbreviations, producing equal-opportunity incoherence.
I remember an ADA challenge to BART over the fact that its on-board announcements were incomprehensible to the hearing-impaired. It took a while to convince the complaining parties that in fact, BART’s on-board announcements are incomprehensible to everyone, so no discrimination had occurred.
