Blog Against Disablism Day: May 1

Thanks to Chris of Creek Running North for the link to this event. Please join in if you feel so inclined…

I was just at a Code Pink meeting; one of the things we discussed was the fact that a lot of disability attorneys are pushing hard for Debold voter technology for the vision impaired. Natalie says she feels a bit like a traitor to the disabled community in standing up against voter fraud for ALL citizens.

Rock and a hard place: this is why this is an important issue, and why there are no easy answers…

  1. Though I get to say lots of unpopular things in my job, few are more unpopular than to observe that what’s good for the disabled is not always good for everyone.

Actually, the interests converge about 80% of the time—low floor buses, for example, make boarding faster and vehicles more spacious for everyone, even though they were invented due to the Americans with Disabilities Act. But the exceptions are nasty, such as font-size requirements that force us to speak only in abbreviations, producing equal-opportunity incoherence.

I remember an ADA challenge to BART over the fact that its on-board announcements were incomprehensible to the hearing-impaired. It took a while to convince the complaining parties that in fact, BART’s on-board announcements are incomprehensible to everyone, so no discrimination had occurred.

  2. Pica, there is discussion on my work website about the use of electronically assisted voting for VI and blind people at http://www.visionaustralia.org.au/%5Cinfo.aspx?page=979. Thought you and Natalie may be interested. I should hope that the site is accessible to a person with vision impairment!!
