Rain

I hesitate to celebrate the arrival of rain when it’s such a problem for others, but, well, the rain’s arrived.

The smell of damp earth. Gone are those hot dusty days when you could hardly breathe. The grass alfalfa field has a few rogue sprouts of wheat that have gone bananas.

I got Numenius from the airport this evening. He has many sketches from the Jemez mountains, a place where there’s also very low rainfall.

It feels like time to snuggle and give thanks for the rain.

  1. I wonder how the shrinking world has been working on me this way. I don’t give thanks for rain or snow or much of any weather without a twinge of… guilt?... for regions or nations that seem increasingly like neighbors.

Perhaps my desire for a sense of place and community is driven in part by my discomfort with my growing sense of a global community.

  2. Interesting point, Peter. I do think we have a positive duty to celebrate these things, as long as we can do so in a non-gloating way. For one thing, it can help focus our attention on our absolute dependence on the natural world, which we otherwise spend so much effort trying to keep at a distance.
