Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox for their historic come-from-behind victory over the Yankees in the league championship series, culminating in tonight’s Game 7 thrashing 10-3.

We went to El Mariachi, our favorite taqueria in Davis, to watch most of the game. I arrived just before Johnny Damon hit his grand slam home run in top of the second inning to put the Red Sox up 6-nothing. Our friends Kevin and Denise showed up for the final three innings, and we were getting pretty rowdy by the end.

David Ortiz hit a two-run home run to start things off in the first inning, and deservedly won the series MVP award. But there were many other fine performances by other Red Sox players: Curt Schilling, Johnny Damon, Mark Bellhorn, Derek Lowe, to name a few.

When we got home the coyotes started howling in celebration, quite near to the house.

Now on to the World Series!

  1. In Allston, it was the drunk BU kids who were howling. I went to bed hoping that no-one would decide to celebrate on top of my car. Fortunately, the celebrations didn’t seem to be too destructive this time around. Glad to hear you’re enjoying the games from the other coast—at least you don’t have to stay up as late out there.

  2. Milagro indeed! I hope it’s an omen of good things to come. Namely, that Kerry will win by a landslide, confounding the blasted pollsters. Down with swaggering bullies!

  3. Today, my students were working on a paired vocabulary activity. I overheard two boys discussing in Spanish last night’s game, talking about the home runs and how their team, the “Jankees” lost. I sat with them a bit and we talked a little about baseball. Leo said that next to music, baseball was his favorite thing.

  4. There were many smiles to compliment the dark circles under many eyes here in Beantown! Not sure the “shock” has worn off but there is cautious excitement for the “series” to come!
