Tomato Corner

Tomato corner It’s the time of year when tomato trucks are traveling the country roads of Yolo and Solano counties. Some of them gather their wares from the fields just east of here, and then make the right-hand turn from the levee road onto the main road by our house. Some tomatoes inevitably spill out of the overfilled bins of the trucks.

When the first rains come in a month or two, the reconstituted tomato mush on the road surface is very slippery to travel on — be careful.

  1. Some years back, when we were traveling around the country, we met a couple who were retired and basically being nomads with their travel trailer. They mentioned that in some seasons they were able to dine quite well for free on roadkill veggies.

Bet a few sacks of that would make decent solar-cooked tomato paste.

  2. I REALLY like that photograph! XLNT POV. Not to mention I wish some of those tomatoes would fall near me. They’re $2.99 a pound down here.

  3. Thanks for letting me know that the annual tomato trucks of September are still rolling and splatting.

Australians actually serve fried half-tomatoes for breakfast. A cooked half-tomato looks rather like it just fell splat off a truck, but not quite as appetizing.
