A Contraption Named Lila

lila.jpgYesterday afternoon we went over to visit Peter Wagner, owner and creator of Whymcycles, which can only be described as elaborate contraptions made up entirely of used bicycle parts. I wanted a stable bike that could transport me, my crutches, and my assorted bits and pieces to work and back.

He had just the thing: a lilac/lavender piece made up in the front of two girls’ bikes welded together and joined to a larger bike. It has five gears and a parking brake. I am ALL SET.

I caused a sensation at the Physical Therapist’s office this morning, showing everyone the photos. The PT says I’m ready to ride the two miles to work and back on Monday. Move over, Lance Armstrong…

  1. Absolutely fantastic! I’ve seen adult tricycles and particularly good ones for teenagers with balance problems who like to exercise – I haven’t seen a “back to front” tricycle before! I’m not at all surprised you caused a sensation at the PTs – Peter Wagner may well find himself inundated with orders for more – great rehab tool not to mention FUN! Way to go Pica – you sound like a PT’s dream patient – motivated and innovative!

  3. Hilarious! When you said “tricycle,” I never imagined the two wheels would be in the FRONT! Is there a reason?

  5. Well I guess that answers my question I was going to ask about how the ankle rehab was coming along. Must have pretty good dorsiflexion if you can peddle this contraption (without the boot?)

  6. What a hoot! You are one gutsy lady…. with purpose and innovative gray matter. What can I say? Its a bit girly, may be time to haul out an purple in your wardrobe! Have fun. By the way, what to do say about the Red Sox taking 2 from the Yanks in NY???

  7. HoHohO! It’s very cute, but is also strange. And i don’t understand how can you pedal it with only one leg…. :-)

    hugs!

  9. Peter Wm. Wagner is still in the business of custom made whymiscal transportation. He just delivered to me a hand-pedaled tricycle made from an old bike. It is for those who have difficulty walking, or pedaling a bicycle with their feet. It is totally fun!

  10. I’m Peter’s brother, and I set up the Whymcycles web site with pictures of a few of his creations. The two-wheels in front configuration is much more stable and less likely to tip over in turns (remember the guy on Laugh-In years ago?). See the Whymcycles web site for other examples of two-wheels-in-front configurations.
Pete doesn’t have a PC, but I will forward to him hardcopy of messages sent to this address.

  11. Hi Fred-
I got to know Peter in Corvallis during KSR sculpture racing. I was trying to find a website for his stuff? Does he have one?

Also, I have a baby gift (which is probably rapidly getting too small) that I would like to send down, if you have an address.

    Thanks for your help.
