Apple Hazelnut Mix

A recent addition to our traditional breakfast of nine-grain cereal, cooked with some sort of fruit and nut gorp, dried apricots, figs, and prunes. The hazelnuts make it very yummy.

  1. Ach, phooey! You just can’t get hazelnuts in Japan! (a 200 gram bag of almonds costs $5.00!). All these delicious recipes popping up everywhere this Christmas season and I feel like a hungry urchin gazing through the bakery window… Many fond memories of wandering through the organic store in Eugene, Oregon, and buying BAGS of hazelnuts, walnuts, brazil nuts, pecans, and cashews…

Do you use milk with your cereal? I’ve been trying to find ways to east cereal without milk. Irish wholegrain oatmeal is wonderful, but getting a little old.

  2. Butuki: I use yoghurt, Numenius uses milk. My sister is highly lactose intolerant (and averse) and has apple juice (unfiltered) on her cereal.

Why not add linseeds and other grains to your Irish wholegrain oatmeal??

  3. Woe… can’t get unfiltered apple juice (at least not at reasonable prices), and have never seen linseeds here. The only real grains that you see here are rice (which I love and it is very good here), millet seeds, barley, and, sometimes, whole wheat. Not much else. Japanese don’t eat many western grains except as white bread.

  4. Sounds like you need a care package to me. We could do a swap: you find me some luscious goodies at Japanese stationery stores, I’ll get you some interesting grains…

  5. Sorry to take so long to get back to you. I haven’t been on the internet much these past two weeks. I fear I’m going through the same blogging funk that a lot of other people are. I wonder what it is? Since it’s around Christmas time and Christmas often gets people down, I think it says a lot about the nature of blogging and the people who blog AND our culture.

And it’s not so much that I’m down, but that I want things to feel substantial and tactile. I’m getting outside a lot more these days, and making more effort to meet people.

Sounds like a plan about the exchange of goodies. My vacation starts next Thursday and since I’ll be in the apartment doing the traditional Japanese end of the year “spring cleaning” I’ll also have the time to get out and do a little shopping. See what I can find for you and Numenius.

    How’s that sound?
