Back To Class

My second semester of Spanish started yesterday. Again, this is through the local city college. Thankfully we're using the same exact text so I don't have to spend lots of money on new books. It's a long class period -- I think fifteen weeks, running the middle of August through the middle of December. We meet twice a week, in a slightly more inconvenient location (south Davis rather than on the UC Davis campus) than last time. I didn't make good on my intention to study lots of Spanish over the summer, but at least we're starting out with a review of last semester's work.

At least you can practise spanish conversation with Pica. I'm sure you've become more eloquent in spanish than me. They stopped running my course so now I will have to rely on one from the internet and self discipline in practising on my own.

I kinda learned Spanish on my own with tapes then I took a couple of courses. I keep up by watching a telenovela every night - the stories are usually pretty lame, but it's great practice for training your ear for conversational Spanish and picking up vocabulary. I also made the aquaintance of some immigrants from Argentina and a friend and I pay one of them to basically converse with us and correct our grammar and answer questions - that's really the best practice. It's hard because I have to overcome my shyness at sounding stupid in front of a native speaker. Then again, her English isn't so good either! You can often do an exchange - speak in Spanish for an hour and in English for an hour and help each other out.

¡Buena suerte!
