Show us what is rough.

Photos

First Spiritualist Cathedral on State Street, downtown Columbus, Ohio

The grandiosity of the name somewhat overwhelms this humble structure, but its very rough and textured walls are quite beautiful.

Dreaded Hill, Whiting Ranch Regional Wilderness, Trabuco Canyon, California

Photo shows the muted grandeur of our local foothills as autumn greens into winter.

Discussion

Fascinating. I never knew that Spiritualists built cathedrals. Is this the only one or are there more, John? -- Joel

The sign out front reads "Cathedral." I have always seen it in print as "First Spiritualist Temple."

Those names are a little on the ambitious side for the actuality -- were I choosing, I would aim closer to "chapel."

I don't know the history of this particular church, but I doubt that the current congregation built it. It is an old structure, (for Columbus, that is, probably over 100 years old), and many of the churchs in the area have changed denomination.

The old Methodist church around the corner from my house was sold to an A.M.E. congregation, and there are a couple of other church buildings currently on the market, just waiting for the right assembly to come along and begin worship in them again.
